What is Ayurveda?

Ayurveda means "knowledge of life" and is an ancient, traditional medical system that originated in India more than 5,000 years ago, where herbs and herbal teas affect all spheres of man - mental, physical and spiritual. Ayurveda places the individual in a holistic context, and each individual has his or her own distinctive characteristics that shape his or her personality.

The doctrine identifies a number of so-called body types (constitutions) or doshas each with their specific characteristics, qualities and characteristics.

Identifying and gaining an understanding of your own body type is the key to understanding how these personal characteristics leave their mark on our lives. Maintaining a balance between these doshas is also considered important for good health.

According to Ayurveda, in order to prevent diseases and maintain health, the use of herbs, oils and spices, i.e. herbal remedies, is necessary. Natural remedies should be combined with exercise, meditation, dietary changes and other methods to support health and well-being. People who practice Ayurveda try to understand the individual needs of each patient and adapt treatment methods to each person.

Among the 50 most important herbs in Ayurveda are:

brahmi
shatavari
ashwagandha
triphala
maca

These are just five of many other herbs that are important in Ayurveda. Each of them has its own special characteristics.

Triphala and Brahmi are herbs recommended for detox. Firstly, because they help to clean the intestines, and secondly, because during detox we are simply irritable and can have a changeable mood. Brahmi can also help those who have difficulty concentrating, poor memory, a lot of stress and anxiety. Shatavari is considered an adaptogen, i.e. a natural plant that protects the body against stress and can also increase the body's ability to adapt. Traditionally, the root has been used to help women with menopause because it helps balance hormones. Maca is also considered an adaptogen and has a reputation for working for those who have lost sex drive and to help with fertility. Ashwagandha, in turn, is called the “Prince of

Ayurveda” – and acts as a “Rasayan” which means that it is generally strengthening, balancing and rejuvenating.

Ayurvedic diet

The Ayurvedic diet is an individual diet. It's about eating meals that serve a person with a given body type. According to Ayurveda, some people will feel better eating, for example, 3 meals a day, while others will feel better eating 5 meals a day. People with a dominant Pitta dosha will feel good drinking lukewarm or cold water, while Vata will need warm, cooked meals, preferably with the addition of spices (in autumn and winter, the so-called golden milk will be ).

Golden milk gets its name from the addition of turmeric, which gives it a vibrant, golden color. Golden milk is a drink based on milk (cow or plant) with the addition of spices (turmeric, ginger, cinnamon, cardamom, pepper), honey and fat (e.g. clarified butter).

Kitchari, on the other hand, is an easy-to-digest dish based on rice and mung beans. It should be overcooked and eaten immediately after preparation. It often contains the addition of overcooked vegetables (eg carrots) and aromatic spices (eg ginger, turmeric, chilli).

Dietary supplements in Ayurveda

Remember that, no matter what herbs you use, Ayurvedic, Chinese, Indian - the principle is always the same. You take good quality herbs, strong enough, add lifestyle changes and give them time. Not a day, not a week, not a month, but at least three months. And sometimes even six, nine or twelve months.
