What is seaweed?

We can find very small algae, as well as ones that can be up to several meters long.They also differ in color, as we can find green, blue, red or brown algae. Many centuries ago, they were used as valuable ingredients in medicine, cooking and beauty products.

Algae is primarily a source of vitamins A, C and E, as well as iron, magnesium, phosphorus, calcium and iodine. In addition, they contain antioxidants and chemical compounds used in nutrition and beauty products. The properties of algae are invaluable. It is algae that beautifies, rejuvenates and has a beneficial effect on the condition of the skin. In addition, they remove toxins and heavy metals from the body and contribute to well-being.

Different types of seaweed

The most popular types of algae are spirulina and chlorella.

Spirulina

Spirulina is a microalgae that belongs to cyanobacteria. This type of algae is mainly characterized by its high protein content, which is why it is recommended for people who are active in sports. In addition, spirulina is rich in beta-carotene, magnesium and vitamins K, A, B, C, E, D. This product belongs to superfoods due to its antiviral, anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties. Spirulina contributes to the body's well-being. Spirulina is available in different forms: capsules, powder or as an extract.

Blue spirulina

Blue spirulina is a dried powder consisting of Arthrospira platensis spirulina extract. The blue spirulina gets its color from phycocyanin, a natural pure blue dye extracted from blue-green spirulina algae. Phycocyanin is a protein with a complete range of amino acids. Unlike the green spirulina, the blue variant does not taste or smell of fish but contains valuable active substances just like the green spirulina.

Chlorella

Chlorella is an unusual algae, not without reason it belongs to the so-called "superfoods", i.e. a group of food products with exceptional health properties. It is a real vitamin bomb – it contains, among other things: a high amount of chlorophyll, amino acids and folic acid. Algae is most often used in powder form as an ingredient in fruit and vegetable smoothies, but it also works well as a supplement to desserts, sauces, soups and pasta. Another way to supplement chlorella is to take chlorella tablets.

Agar-agar

Agar-agar is extracted from algae, where red algae is extracted from the sea, dried, cleaned, boiled and fried. In this way, we get a gel-forming substance in the form of powder. Therefore, we can say that agar-agar belongs to the group of seaweeds, which are then processed into powder or diced products. This product is very popular, especially in the vegan kitchen.
