What are amino acids?

Amino acids are organic compounds and building blocks of proteins. There are 20 different amino acids that can be divided into two categories: Non-essential amino acids, that is, those that the body can produce itself, and Essential amino acids that must be supplied through the diet.

Our body needs proteins for many important processes. Proteins contributes to the maintenance of normal skeleton and also contributes to the growth of muscle mass and to its maintenance.

The non-essential amino acids include: Asparagine, Cysteine, Alanine, Glutamine, Proline, Aspartic Acid, Glycine, Serine Glutamic Acid/Glutamate and Tyrosine.

The essential amino acids that must be supplied through the diet are: Phenylalanine, Methionine, Arginine, Lysine, Histidine, Isoleucine, Threonine, Leucine, Valine and Tryptophan

The proteins we eat are broken down into amino acids in the gut before they are absorbed into the body and used as building blocks for new proteins.
