What is choline?
Choline bitartrate is an ester of tartaric acid and choline and a water-soluble nutrient. It is usually found under the B-complex vitamins and is a substance that is necessary for the nervous system.
Choline helps with the burning of fat in the body and is part of the structure of the cells. Choline forms the fat-degrading substance lecithin, which helps to transport fat out of the body and can thus keep fat storage in the liver at a healthy level. Choline also aids in the breakdown and absorption of vitamins A, D, E and K.
The body produces some choline itself, but we need to supply the rest via the diet we eat. The substance occurs naturally in, among other things: eggs, liver, beef, salmon, broccoli and cauliflower, however, the supply from food is not always sufficient, which is why deficiencies can occur.
Lack of choline
Choline deficiency can lead to, among other things, fatty liver - impaired liver function and liver damage. The EFSA- European Food Safety Authority recommends an intake of 400 mg of choline for adults per day, while the US equivalent FDA recommends an intake of 550 mg daily.
Possible side effects
Always follow the recommended daily intake to avoid possible side effects. At the recommended dosage, choline has no known side effects. Very high doses can lead to side effects such as nausea and diarrhea.
