Thyme occurrence

Thyme belongs to the mint family Lamiaceae. Perennial, creeping plant, very resistant to both summer drought and winter cold. The plant attracts i.a. bees. Its edible functionality together with decorative dark green small leaves make it very worthy of cultivation.

What is thyme good for?

Thyme mainly contains carvacrol and thymol, which are responsible for the interesting properties, but also citral, linalool, geraniol, flavonoids (luteolin and apigenin), triterpenes and rosmarinic acid. Such chemical composition provides antiseptic effect (antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral). The herb has a soothing, expectorant effect and helps against gas formation in the stomach. In the Middle Ages, Hildegard of Bingen recommended thyme for skin rashes and scabies.

Thyme is also appreciated both as an herbal tea and as a cooking spice. Excellent for mixing with other herbs such as peppermint and sage.

Ingredients: dried thyme (Thymus L. herba).

Dosage: Herbal tea: 1 teaspoon to a cup, let steep for about 10 minutes. Gargle water: Strong tea can be used to gargle with. Also for mouthwash.

Storage: Dry, cool and dark.
