Salvia presence

Salvia has been a valued spice plant since the Middle Ages. The plant got its name from the Latin salvare and salvus, which mean 'heal' and 'whole' and 'healthy' and 'safe' respectively. Around the world there are about 900 wild-growing species of salvia. In the Swedish flora we can find four of them, however, they are extremely rare and only occur in the southern part of the country. The herb thrives on forest edges and in open fields.

Salvia is a green plant with purple flowers, flowering in summer, it attracts pollinating butterflies, bumblebees and bees. Has a clear taste with a bitter note.
