Rowan occurrence

Rowan came to Sweden after the ice sheet and is a small tree in the rose plant family. The tree grows not only in forests, but also in parks, gardens and along streets - Rowan is an ornamental tree. It blooms in May with many small flowers in clusters. They are fertilized by flies that are drawn to the special scent the flowers have, after fertilization, rowan berries are formed that ripen in the fall. Rowan flowers are collected during the flowering period, that is, at the turn of May and June.

Rowan-active substances

Rowan flowers are rich in vitamins: A, C, E, K and minerals: magnesium, copper, potassium and sodium. In addition, it contains anthocyanins, organic acids, bitterness, tannins, flavonoids, terpenes and sugars, especially fructose. Thanks to these active substances, rowan has hydrating properties and can be used externally in the form of wraps and face lotions that nourish, moisturize the skin, and lighten spots and discolorations at the same time. The rowan flowers can also be used in the kitchen for jams and jellies.

Rowan use

* Infusion:

1 teaspoon of rowan flowers pour 200 ml of boiling water. Leave to infuse for 30 minutes, strain. Drink half a glass twice a day. The infusion can also be cooled and then used as a poultice or face wash.

* Tincture

100 g of rowan flowers pour 500 ml of vodka or rum. For better taste, you can add some apples, apricots or spices (cinnamon, cardamom, anise, cloves). Mix and leave in a dark place for 14 days. After this time, strain and pour into a bottle. The treatment consists in consuming 30 ml of tincture once a day for two weeks (the cycle must be repeated after 2 months).

In excessive doses, rowan can have a laxative effect on the body (sometimes causing diarrhea).Due to a lack of research, rowan flowers are not recommended for pregnant women and nursing mothers.
