Hibiscus occurrence

Hibiscus is an annual, hairy plant with simple hairs and stellate hairs. The plant is native to Africa and grows in many tropical and subtropical regions around the world - including China, Thailand and Mexico. These flowers are one of the many species of shrubs, trees and flowers in the mallow family (Malvaceae). Several species from the genus are cultivated, for example the houseplant hibiscus (H. rosa-sinensis).

What is Hibiscus good for?

Hibiscus has long been used as an ornamental plant, but the flower is also edible and considered a delicacy in some parts of South America. The plant can be used as a fruity flavoring in cooking and tea, by itself or together with other herbs and spices. Hibiscus tea is well known for its red color, sourness, unique flavor and high nutritional properties due to its vitamin C content. In some countries such as Western Sudan, a white hibiscus flower is popular for its bitter taste and is usually served to guests.

Hibiscus contains many active substances: 15-30% organic acids, including malic acid, tartaric acid and citric acid It also contains flavonoid glycosides and acidic polysaccharides.

Ingredients: Dried hibiscus from flower (Hibisci flos).

Dosage: Pour 2.5 dl of boiling water over 1-2 teaspoons of herb and let steep for 5-10 minutes.

Storage: Dry, cool and dark.
