Hops occurrence

Hops is a perennial, climbing herb. The winding shoots can be more than ten meters long. Fast growing. The leaves are opposite, broad and entire to palmately lobed. The plant blooms during the height of summer. In Sweden, hops have been grown and used since the 13th century. The plant occurs mainly in central and southern Sweden, but is also found along the coast and further north.

What are hops good for?

Hops have been used in beer brewing since the 13th century, and it is above all bitter substances (e.g. lupulin) in the glands of the female inflorescences that give the beer its characteristic taste.

The small hops cones contain, among other things, essential oil, resin, tannins, glycosides, flavonoids and can have a mild calming effect, which makes hops suitable for herbal teas and herbs that go well with hops are valerian and passion flower. Hops are also appetite and digestive stimulants. It is also good to make extract or tincture of hops.
