Fenugreek is an annual herb that belongs to the pea family. It grows wild from the eastern Mediterranean to China, but is cultivated all over the world. The herb has light green leaves and small flowers. It is mainly the seeds that are used as a spice, but in Asia the leaves are also used in cooking.

What is fenugreek good for?

Fenugreek has a long history and has been used as a natural remedy for several thousand years for both internal and external use and is also popular as a spice in Asian cuisine.

The herb can be used for fenugreek tea, as a spice in cooking or externally to make poultices.

*The plant has a slightly bitter taste and is used as a spice, mainly in Persian, Indian and Thai cooking, where it is used in breads, curries and various chutnies. Ground seeds are one of the important ingredients in various spice mixes like curry.

*To make fenugreek tea, steep 1-2 teaspoons of the herb in a cup of hot water for 20-30 minutes. Drink morning, evening or after a meal.

* Skin compress- Ground or crushed seeds should be mixed with water to give the mixture a paste-like consistency. This paste must be boiled for five minutes and then applied to the cloth.

The mixture prepared in this way is placed on the sore and diseased place three times a day.

* flavonoids: flavones - luteolin, tricin; flavanones - naringenin; flavonols - quercetin

* glycosides: vitexin, isovitexin, orientin, isoorientin, vicenin-1 and vicenin-2.

* isoflavones : phytoestrogen compounds - which have similar activity to the human hormone estrogen. These include, for example, biokanin A, formonoetin, daidzein.

* vitamins: mainly vitamin PP - nicotinic acid amide,

* minerals and fragrances.
