What is lion's mane?

Lion's mane also called hedgehog mushroom or yamabushitake is a large white mushroom with long thorns that make it resemble a lion's mane when it grows, hence the name lion's mane. The fungus grows on oak and beech. The fruit body appears in autumn and is head or heart shaped. It can be between 10 and 20 centimeters wide and the downward-hanging thorns can be 3 to 5 centimeters long. Almost the entire fruiting body is covered with spines.

The mushroom is an edible mushroom. In Sweden, however, it is very rare and is one of our protected mushrooms that can only be cultivated. In Asia, the mushroom is very popular and its properties have been known for many years in Chinese and Japanese medicine.

What is lion's mane good for?

As I have already mentioned, the mushroom is edible, it has a mild and slightly sweet taste similar to the taste of crab or lobster meat. Lion's mane can be eaten raw, cooked, dried in powder form, or fried in a frying pan. Some people pour boiling water over it and drink it as a tea.

Lion's mane is an extremely interesting mushroom in which many bioactive substances have been discovered.

- substances that are responsible for brain function and affect the production of nerve cells;

- compounds that support the production of nerve growth factor (NGF);

- polysaccharides (including beta-glucan);

- amino acids;

- fatty acids;

- many mineral compounds (phosphorus, potassium, zinc, germanium, iron, selenium);

- vitamin D
