Wild teasel occurrence

Wild teasel is biennial, the first year it forms a rosette of leaves and the second year a stem and flowers. The plant is originally native to the Mediterranean area, but wild specimens can be found in our country. The herb is between 80 and 150 cm high with a strong stem, which, like the leaves, is spiky.

The plants flowers are pink to violet and are clustered on nearly decimetre-long flask-like heads. Flowers in July-August. The plant is very popular with bees and butterflies because of its nectar. This herbs often grows in grassy areas, forests and damp places, roadsides and rough ground.

Wild teasel uses

In the past, Wild teasel was used as bristle combs to process wool. The plant was also excellent for roughing up woven woolen textiles. The dried inflorescences of the Wild teasel are very decorative in various flower arrangements. A decoction of the herb was used to treat boils, wounds and skin cracks.

Ingredients:Wild teasel dried root (Dipsacus follonum radix)

Dosage:

Tea: 1 tablespoon of roots in a glass of water, boil for 5 minutes, strain. Drink a glass twice a day.

Tincture: One part dried Wild teasel to 5 parts alcohol; eg 20 g herbs and 100 g alcohol. Use vodka (about 40%-70% alcohol).

Do this: Put the herb in a glass jar with a tight-fitting lid and pour over the alcohol. Stir and seal the jar. Leave for at least 14 days (preferably in sunlight). Shake the jar regularly to mix the contents. Then strain and pour into a clean glass bottle. Drink 3 drops of the tincture three times a day. You can also use the tincture to wash your skin.

Storage: dry and cool.
