Shepherd's purse is a plant that belongs to the family of mustard plants. Probably originating from the Mediterranean area. It is an annual plant that grows to a height of 10–50 cm and has small white flowers in broom-like inflorescences. It blooms from May to October, but if the ground is not frozen or snow-covered, lomme can bloom all year round. Planting sites it likes are next to roads or on open ground.Shepherd's purse is considered to be one of the most common weed species in Sweden. However, many people are not aware of the valuable properties and uses of Shepherd's purse.

What is Shepherd's purse good for?

The seeds, leaves and roots are edible and the plant has long been used for herbal teas and is often included in universal teas. In China, the plant is cultivated as a useful natural remedy. The herb's fresh leaves are perfect for a salad together with other vegetables. Its seed has a strong flavor and is therefore suitable as a spice. The roots have a taste reminiscent of ginger or radish.

Shepherd's purse has many valuable properties that have been known since ancient times. The plant is said to have hemostatic, bactericidal, anti-inflammatory and vasoconstrictive effect, therefore it can be used effectively in wound care. The herb also contains many active substances such as:

Shepherd's purse side effects

Dosage: Infusion: ½-1 teaspoon of herb per cup of boiling water. 1-3 cups daily. It is also possible to make a decoction into a poultice to stop bleeding.
