Valerian root occurrence

The taproot is a perennial, meter-high plant that thrives in moist places. Blooms all summer starting around midsummer. Valerian root has white flowers in clusters. The rhizome is thick, sometimes with above-ground or underground shoots.

What is valerian root good for?

Valerian root has been used since the Greeks and Roman times and it is precisely the root stock, i.e. the underground stem and root used in natural medicine but also in conventional medicine.

The herb is best known for its calming effect and is good to drink in the evening before bedtime. Boil water and add 1-2 teaspoons of dried herbs per deciliter of water. Then let stand and cover for 15 minutes.

Contraindications and side effects

Valerian root is a fairly safe herb but remember to always follow the recommended daily intake to avoid possible side effects.

The herb should not be consumed by pregnant women or nursing mothers, and should not be given to children under 12 years of age. Valerian root should also not be used by people suffering from chronic diseases. Most often, these are people undergoing treatment for cancer or struggling with kidney or liver disease.
