Viola tricolor occurrence

 Viola tricolor is an annual, 10-30 cm tall herb in the violet family. The plant has beautiful, blue-white-yellow flowers and an upright stem. Blooms from April to October, but has its best bloom in May-June. Viola tricolor occurs throughout the country, but is common only in southern and central Sweden, sometimes grown as an ornamental plant.

The species name tricolor comes from the Latin tres (three) and color (colour), the name means three-coloured and refers to the flower.

What is Viola tricolor good for?

Viola tricolor is an edible flower and plant parts used are the whole plant, the aerial part and the root. The plant has a bitter, salty taste. The herb contains many valuable substances such as saponins, flavonoids, salicylic acid derivatives, mucilage and tannins.

Viola tricolor has antioxidant properties thanks to its content of flavonoids and carotenoids, superior content of mucilage (a type of sugar) gives the flower its skin soothing and moisturizing properties.

In folk medicine, the herb is used internally, among other things, against skin rashes and so-called milk scab in children but also in respiratory catarrh and rheumatic fever.

Viola tricolor - contraindications

The herb should not be used by people who are hypersensitive to salicylates and pansy herbs or by pregnant women. Always follow the recommended daily intake to avoid possible side effects.
