Stinging nettle occurrence

The plant occurs in gardens, forests, by rivers or lakes, and even along roads. Often thought of as a weed that stings if you touch it, stinging nettle is much more than just a weed. It is characterized by a rich composition of biologically active substances.

What is stinging nettle good for?

The nettle has many properties. The plant is used for cooking, among other things for soups, perhaps because the herb is actually rich in nutrition and contains vitamins B1, C, E, and K, as well as phosphorus, manganese, silicon and calcium. Stinging nettle has a natural and fresh taste, and goes well with a cup of herbal tea. It is also said that nettles have a blood forming and cleansing effect on the body.

Nettle use

Preparing the plant for internal or external use can be done in several ways. The fastest method is to pour boiling water over the appropriate amount of the herb, but you can also prepare a decoction or macerate, which requires a little more time, but contains more healthy ingredients.

Infusion - pour boiling water over 1 teaspoon of nettle root, let steep for about 15 minutes, strain. Clear!

Decoction - pour a glass of cold water over 2 teaspoons of herb and boil covered for about 5 minutes, strain. Done!

Macerated - pour a glass of herbs with 3 cups of cold water and leave for 8 hours, then strain. Store in the fridge.

Tincture - in a large jar, add 100g of the roots with 0.5l of alcohol (70%), add 50g of sugar and mix well. Keep the jar tightly closed in a shady place, and after two weeks, strain and pour the contents into a bottle.

Do nettles have any side effects?

It is recommended to drink up to three cups daily to ensure the beneficial effects of this plant. Stinging nettle also has blood sugar lowering properties, people suffering from diabetes cannot use the herb without consulting a doctor. Pregnant and nursing mothers should also consult a doctor before using the herb.
