Ash occurrence

Ash is one of the most common noble deciduous trees in southern and central Sweden, including Gotland and Öland. The tree is a tall tree that normally grows to around 20 m. The trunk is smooth and grey-green on young trees but becomes cracked and gray over time. The leaves are large and compound. The leaves come last, often as late as early June, and they fall first, sometimes as early as September. The tree only blooms when it is about 30 years old.Ash grows naturally on fresh to moist, nutrient-rich, loamy soil, preferably with moving, near-surface groundwater.

Ash leaves uses

About ash leaves have written St. Hildegard who pointed out the valuable properties of the plant in arthritis:

"If a person is so sick with arthritis in the back, side, or any other place, as if all his limbs were broken or injured, then boil ash leaves in water and lay the sick naked on a linen cloth. Drain the water and put the boiled and hot leaves all over his body, especially on the sore point, and then [roll up the scarf]. Do this often and the sick person will be better."

According to St. Hildegard's ash leaves support the fight against rheumatism, pain and arthritis. The leaves are a very good source of coumarins, which occur in the free state and in glycoside form. They also contain flavonoids, triterpenes, sterols, iridoids, sugar alcohol - mannitol and glycosides - syringin, phenolic acids and many mineral compounds.
