Ground elder ( Aegopodium podagraria), also called herb gerard or bishop's weed is one of our most common weeds among stinging nettles, dandelions and cabbage thistles, which grows in almost the entire country. Not many people know that this plant contains essential oil, resin, protein and vitamin C and can be used in salads, sauces, pies, served hot like spinach and in soups.

Ground elder occurrence

Ground elder is one of our most common weeds and grows in almost the entire country (except in the mountain areas). It is perennial and has a bare, hollow, pale green and upright stem, which can be about 80 cm high, blooms with white flock flowers from June to August. The fruits are egg-shaped and flattened from the side, they resemble cumin.

Ground elder use

The Ground elder is most useful in the spring when the young leaves have just come up. The plant is rich in vitamin C, can be used in salads, sauces, pies, served hot like spinach and in soups. The leaves can also be used as a base in pesto or a green smoothie. They can also be put in a pitcher of cold water and give a just right, green taste.

The plant has also been used medicinally in the medieval monasteries. An old home remedy for gout is to put warm poultices of Ground elder on the aching feet.

Ground elder are a very common plant and it is similar to other plants that can be poisonous. Therefore, before you set out to harvest, it is worth familiarizing yourself with its structure in order not to make a mistake. Choose a place to collect Ground elder that is away from roads with traffic - it is associated with natural pollution.

Ingredients: dried herb of Ground elder(Aegopodium podagraria)

Dosage: Use 1 teaspoon of herbs. Let steep for 15 minutes, then strain through a tea filter. Drink up to three times a day.

External use: Make a warm poultice of Ground elder and apply to the aching feet.

Storage: Store in a dry, cool place.
