Sweet wormwood occurrence

Sweet wormwood is a plant in the wormwood genus, which in turn is part of the Asteraceae family. It is annual and blooms for only a few months. Artemisia has a delicate, sweet fragrance, which, however, does not come from the flowers (they are odorless), but from the leaves.

The herb comes from western Asia and southeastern Europe. Over time, it spread to additional continents and now it can be found in most Asian countries, in Europe, as well as in the United States and Canada, and even in New Zealand.

Sweet wormwood uses

The plant has been used in traditional Chinese medicine since the beginning of our era as an aid in fever. It has also been used to fight various infections. The Chinese are very familiar with summer wormwood and have the best technology to extract artemisinin from it. Artemisinin was found to be very effective in malaria treatment. This discovery was of great importance to medicine and saved the lives of millions of people. The Chinese professor Youyou Tu, who contributed to this discovery, was awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 2015 "for his discoveries about a new malaria therapy."
