What is Brahmi?

Bacopa monnieri is a plant that occurs mainly in India, but it is also found in Sri Lanka, Nepal, Vietnam and China. Its natural habitat is wetlands. Brahmi is a small, climbing herb that reaches from 30 to 60 cm in height. It has fleshy, oblong leaves and simple, small flowers with white, pink or purple petals.

The herb is one of the most important plants used in traditional Ayurvedic medicine and has been used medicinally for over 5,000 years. The herb can be effective for memory, can help with the fight against stress and can increase protein synthesis in the brain. Brahmi also has adaptogenic properties, which means that the body is helped to adapt to new or stressful situations.

The main active ingredients found in brahmi are steroidal saponins - bacosides A and B. In addition to bacosides, Bacopa monnieri also contains:

*phenolic compounds;

*herpestin and brahmin;

*luteolin and apigenin;

*carbohydrates and sugar alcohols;

*phytosterols: stigmasterol, p-sitosterol, stigmastanol;

*proteins and amino sugars;

*terpenoids.

Bacopa monnieri should not be used if:

*bradycardia - Brahmi may cause a further decrease in heart rate;

*pregnancy and breastfeeding - this is dictated by the lack of sufficient data on the safety of using this plant in pregnant women and nursing mothers;

*thyroid disorders - taking Bacopa monnieri may lead to an increase in thyroxine levels;

*intestinal obstruction - Brahmi can speed up the work of the intestines.
