Most of us want healthy and radiant skin, soft, shiny hair and well-manicured nails, but an unbalanced everyday life characterized by poor diet, sedentary lifestyle, lack of sleep and stress can together with periods of hormonal changes, lead to, among other things, tired and irritated skin, brittle and cracked nails and hair loss. To avoid these concerns, it is worth taking care of our health and body through a balanced diet and physical activity. Sometimes, unfortunately, it can't be enough and then we can reach for natural supplements and herbs that help us naturally achieve our intended goal!

Vitamins and minerals for skin, hair and nails in food

The best way to get all the vitamins and other nutrients you need for skin, hair and nails is to eat a healthy, varied and balanced diet. Unfortunately, much of the food we eat today has poor nutritional quality.

Above all, we should avoid fast food, sweets, tobacco and alcohol. This type of food often contains a lot of saturated fat and carbohydrates. Sweets and other unhealthy snacks contain large amounts of sugar and fat, which negatively affect our nails, skin and hair. Instead, we should eat more greens, fruit, whole grain products and drink more liquid, preferably water.

Sources of food and nutrients for skin, hair and nails

* You get vitamin A through carrots and spinach.

* Vitamin B is especially abundant in whole grain products, berries, meat and sausages

* Vitamin C is found, among other things, in citrus fruits and red peppers

* You get a lot of Omega-3 in fatty fish such as salmon and trout.

* Biotin is found in liver, oatmeal and beans

* Antioxidants are found in foods such as broccoli, blueberries, grapes and nuts

Which supplements should I choose?

* Biotin – When it comes to vitamins for hair growth, skin and nails, biotin is probably the most famous of them. Biotin is also called vitamin H or vitamin B7. B7 contributes to normal hair growth. Low biotin levels in the body can negatively affect hair and skin.

* Zinc – is a mineral found in abundant amounts in hair, skin and nails. It is important for the production of protein and for the breakdown of cells in your body. Zinc deficiency is linked to hair loss

* Silicon – is a mineral found naturally in hair. Silicon not only promotes hair, but also strengthens the skin's ability to bind water. It also helps build up connective tissue and promotes the growth of both hair and nails. Thanks to silicon, new hair cells are formed in the hair follicles, which are pushed outwards. Silicon deficiency can lead to lifeless hair and brittle nails. The silicon level decreases with age but can also vary in different people, therefore we have to supply this mineral with food or in the form of silicon supplements.

* MSM - is an organic sulfur compound found in the human body. MSM participates in creating the structure of collagen fibers. It is a natural source of sulfur and works well for anyone who wants to maintain joint mobility and maintain the quality of skin and hair. MSM is also an important component in the formation of keratin and collagen – the two proteins that form the basis of bones, skin, tendons, hair, nails and blood vessel walls. MSM is naturally found in fruits, vegetables, meat and milk, among other things. Unfortunately, when the food is heated or over-processed, this high level of MSM is destroyed.

* Collagen- is a fiber-like protein found in skin, tendons, bones, cartilage, muscles and connective tissue. 30 percent of the entire protein weight consists of collagen. The skin consists of 75 percent collagen. Collagen has a function as a support structure and is necessary for the elasticity of muscles and skin. Collagen is also moisture-binding and thus filling.

Which herbs are good for skin, hair and nails?

* Nettle - the herb is rich in nutrition and contains vitamins B1, C, E, and K, as well as phosphorus, manganese, silicon and calcium. Stinging nettle is a natural way to stop hair loss and give it a healthy look and shine.

* Horsetail - is a valuable natural remedy with its rich content of silicon and other important active substances such as: potassium, flavonoids, saponins, vitamin C and organic acids (silicic acid, malic acid, ascorbic acid, oxalic acid).

* Aloe vera - can be applied to wounds and burns. Aloe is also a valuable ingredient in creams and toners because it facilitates the introduction of other ingredients into the deeper layers of the skin. Aloe also has antibacterial properties.

* Calendula- For irritated and dry skin, calendula is excellent. It has anti-inflammatory, softening and moisturizing properties.

Dosage and contraindications

Always remember that supplements are only a supplement to the balanced and varied diet. Therefore, in the first place, you should eat foods that are rich in vitamins and minerals. If you choose to take supplements, do not exceed the recommended daily intake and if you suffer from any diseases or are unsure whether you can use a certain herb, consult a doctor.
